WHEN WE DISHONOUR GOD.
We dishonour God when we allow people to depend on us. Many people delight in giving that shift the focus of the receivers from God unto themselves. No doubt the scripture commands giving to help those in need. We are to share our goods with the orphans, the poor, widows, strangers, and more. “Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.” (Luke 6:30) “For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.” (Deut. 15:11) But, and there is a thin line here, when your generosity becomes a distraction for the receiver to shift focus from God to you, you have crossed the boundary.
The believer’s mandate is; “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Mat. 28:19-20) We are all to look up to Jesus Christ the Author and Finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2)
Some receivers can make you their first port-of-call. Every time they are out of pocket, they seek you first because waiting on God is not only slow, they unconsciously believe they know who God will send to them – You. Do not allow such people to push you off the cliff. “They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised” (Rom. 1:25)
Allowing people to depend on you can dishonour God when that reliance replaces their trust in Him, essentially turning human support into an idol. While Scripture encourages caring for others and supporting the weak, it warns that shifting the foundational trust of a person’s life away from God and onto a human being is a form of idolatry that dishonours the Creator.
●This reliance can "limit" God from moving in their lives because they are not looking to Him as their first resort.
●It hinders spiritual growth, as God sometimes allows us to face difficulties to teach us to depend solely on Him.
●God intends for people to depend on Him first and to live freely.
The goal is not to stop helping people, but to ensure that in helping, we are pointing them to God, not to ourselves.
THE WORD: "I am old now; I have lived a long time, but I have never seen good people abandoned by the Lord or their children begging for food."
