THE TRUE FOLLOWERS OF JESUS. - Devotional

PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

June 5th, 2026.

Who are the true followers of Jesus Christ?

  • Those who love God and also love one another. Love is the foundation and the key characteristic of a true disciple or follower of Jesus Christ. "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:35)

  • Those who live by His teachings. "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” (John 8:31)

  • Those who bear the fruit of the Spirit. "This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples." (John 15:8)

You cannot claim to follow Jesus if you cannot sacrifice. "And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple." ( Luke 14:27) "In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples." (Luke 14:33)

Therefore, Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24) We follow Jesus! The core characteristics of the followers of Jesus are: LOVE, OBEDIENCE, FRUITFULNESS.

Ask yourself; Do I love as I ought? Am I obedient? Do I have fruit to show? The fruit we bear shows who we are. Not who we are in the four walls of the church dazzling with co-worshippers praise but who we are outside the walls of the church buildings. "Therefore by their fruits you will know them." (Matthew 7:20) We can only produce fruit if we are glued to the vine (John 15) and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us.

We have to ascertain who we serve because Christianity in its present form or as practiced today can be both religion and relationship. Religion is “the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.”  Most religions are similar in that they are built upon the concept that man can reach a higher power or state of being through his own efforts. Is your focus on man or on God? Are you in the church as a favour to God? Have you carved a gold calf and call it the god that delivered you? Specifically, do you see your church leader as the power house? Remember: “ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD (Rom 3:23). You cannot reach God through man. You have to build a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. To fully understand this, look up the story of the Pharisee and the Tax collector (Luke 18:9-14)

I want us to meditate on this conversation between Jesus and the woman at the well: “Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”  “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.” (John 4:21-22 NIV) (Religion versus Relationship)

THE WORD: “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. GOD IS SPIRIT, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24 NIV)
