Here is the word of God to Zechariah before John was born: ".......Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
(Luk.1.13-17.NIV). John's God-given purpose was to prepare the people's hearts to receive the Messiah.Nothing was heard of John after his birth until he appeared on scene, this time as John the Baptist wearing "clothes made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey." (Mat.3.4.NIV). He was different because he grew up in the wilderness.
In today's world, we would have condemned him and categorised him as one with mental illness.
In my corner of the world, we only see witches and the devil not the hand of God in things outside our 'normal' life.
Maybe parents that have children who do not conform to the norms of the society need to ask themselves; "did I ask him/her from the Lord?" If they did, all that they can do is pray. And if they did not, all they can do is pray and not condemn. Those whose lives seem perfect should pray too and not add salt to injury, for you never know what the God of vengeance will do. God definitely is at work. He promise to teach our children Himself (Isa. 54:13).
Rahab, the prostitute, was the only one who knew the truth about Israel and the spies. She said: “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you." (Jos.2.9.NIV). Are we sure her prostitution wasn't for that singular purpose - to help the spies? She was graciously rewarded by God. She was saved from destruction and became the mother of Boaz...
Let us be careful. Do not judge and do not condemn. God is at work. God's way is mysterious.
WORD: “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand." (Isa.64.8.NIV)
