In the Book of Job, chapters one and two, twice Satan afflicted Job and before each attack, the following conversation took place in heaven.
The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”(Job.1.7.; 2:2 NIV - twice)
Twice God asked Satan: “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” (Job.1.8; 2:3 NIV)
At the end of each of these conversations, Satan got God's approval to afflict Job. The first affliction was about Job's possessions while the second was about his health. Considering that Job could still work his way up after losing all he had, if he was still standing, Satan struck his health. Satan was determined to wreck Job completely that he will deny God.
In his trials, Job made two profound statements.
1. When he lost his possessions, he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” (Job.1.21.NIV)
2. When he was battling with health issues, he said, "Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”
(Job.2.10.NIV)
Twice, the Bible records that in all these, Job did not sin (Job 1:22; 2:10)
Why was Job afflicted twice? To strip him of all earthly possessions and the flesh.
What lesson do these hold for us?
1. Job was in the world but the world did not pass through him; rather, he passed through the world. We learned something similar from Daniel. Daniel passed through Babylon but Babylon did not pass through Daniel. It is possible for us to live in this world and leave our footsteps in the sand. (Jh 17:16)
2. The soul is the Lord’s. If Satan cannot use earthly possessions and the flesh against us, he cannot touch nor destroy our souls. (Mat 10:28)
3. As long as we do not allow the world to pass through us, Satan will walk away from us.
It is possible to achieve this before we face trials if only we allow the operation of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.
WORD: "............... Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.
