All who believe in Jesus Christ are called to serve "...even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many". (Mat 20:28)
From the beginning, God had made each of us responsible to one another. Hence, He asked Cain - where is thy brother? And to be able to serve effectively, there are some criteria we must meet.
What does it take to be a cupbearer? Who is a cupbearer? What are the responsibilities of a cupbearer? We know first hand that a cupbearer stands before kings. A cupbearer serves kings. Believers serve the King of kings. So, what endeared Nehemiah not only to the heart of the Persian King Artaxerxes but to God?
The role of the cupbearer in biblical times was a position of significant responsibility and trust, often held by a high-ranking official in the royal court. The cupbearer was tasked with serving wine to the king and ensuring that it was not poisoned, thus safeguarding the monarch's life. This position required not only vigilance and loyalty but also a close relationship with the king, as the cupbearer was often privy to confidential matters and discussions. The cupbearer's duties extended beyond merely serving drinks; they were also responsible for the quality and safety of the wine, often tasting it themselves before presenting it to the king. This act of tasting was a safeguard against assassination attempts, which were not uncommon in ancient royal courts. The cupbearer's proximity to the king often allowed them to become a confidant and advisor, as seen in Nehemiah's case. (Topical Encyclopedia)
Similarly, we are called to trust and be trusted. “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much (Luke 16:10) “Do you see a man who excels in his work?
He will stand before kings; He will not stand before ]unknown men.” (Prov. 22:29) The cupbearer’s position requires vigilance, loyalty, and a close relationship with the king just as the believers’ position. We are privy to confidential information too. God said; “should I hide from Abraham what Am about to do?” (Gen. 18:17) We taste God’s goodness and or otherwise and know exactly how it feels before sharing the experience.
Cupbearer is not a job to look down on but it is about the most important job in the palace and Nehemiah did it so well that it earned him the support needed to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. A pagan king supporting the people of God! How are you serving God in your duty post?
THE WORD: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” (Col. 3:23-24 NIV)
