During the celebration of the Passover with His disciples, Jesus said to them: “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” (Mat.26.21.NIV)
Each of the disciples asked the question; "Lord, is it I?" When it came to the turn of Judas, he asked, "Rabbi, is it I?"Betrayal is being unfaithful in guarding, maintaining or fulfilling the trust given, especially in times of need. It is to expose someone to an enemy by treachery or disloyalty (Ps. Kevin Koh)
Then, Cain betrayed his brother Abel. He deceitfully lured him to be slaughtered because he was jealous of him. Cain failed to reason or accept that Abel was a better person. It is possible that Judas felt the same way about Jesus even though, like Cain and Abel, they lived closely like blood brothers.
Abel represented the truth of God as Jesus is The Truth.
Why do we betray one another? Why do we sell out each other? Why do we reveal the information that is secretly kept with us to the enemy? It is simply because we want to damage the trusting friend or brother. You secretly hate that individual who trusts you. The seed of betrayal is deeply sown in you and it controls your heart. Even when you have the opportunity to change like Judas had, it feels impossible to turn back. It is self-destructive.
Jesus said to His disciples; “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered." (Mat.26.31.NIV). But Peter alone answered, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” (Mat.26.33.NIV) (It is an attitude of I am better than the others), cheap recognition. How many friends stay with you when the chips are down? Why do they disappear? Where is the boasting and assurances?
In denial, most people lack knowledge of the brewing storm. They lack knowledge of the cost to themselves. So, when the truth hit home, they run. Denial is often propelled by FEAR. It is an instant reaction without deep thinking. And this is the reason people can turn back to apologise/repent after they have had time to process their actions.
How many friends or family have you assured of your unfailing support? How faithful are you to your words?
