"I 'M GOING OUT TO FISH." - Devotional

 

PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT.

"I 'M GOING OUT TO FISH."
"Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’M GOING OUT TO FISH,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing." (John.21.1-3.NIV)

How so very easy for us to slip back into our old habits? Jesus had appeared to the disciples twice before now and they had received instructions for what will happen next especially because Jesus wasn't there to direct them. "On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about." (Act.1.4.NIV) But instead, they went out to fish - they went back to where they were when Jesus called them out to be His disciples.

A similar scenario played out in the wilderness (Exodus 32) when Moses went up the mountain to receive the law. The people became impatient/agitated because he stayed longer than expected. The next thing they did was to 'return' to Egypt, that is, back to their old habits. They made a Gold Calf and called it their god.

But instead of the repercussions the people experienced in the wilderness, Jesus waited on the shore and called out to the disciples. "He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish." (John.21.5-6.NIV)

Why do we easily go back to our old habits when things appear to be at standstill?
☆ It is lack of faith in a faithful God! "The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.......” (John.3.8.NIV). We are His and the sheep of His pasture.

Jesus Christ showed us example of exceptional love to erring children like us. Instead of abandonment, there was restoration. Peter was fully restored. God of second chance!
