WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT?
"And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." (Eph.4.30.NIV). This is a reminder of what we already know. Important to note however, is the 'b' part of the verse - "with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption"
The day of redemption is the future day when we will all be resurrected, changed, and receive our resurrected bodies. The Holy Spirit "sealing" is a present guarantee of this future reality, assuring believers of their secured place in God's eternal plan.
In 2 Peter 3:10-12, Peter referred to the same future day as "the day of the Lord." "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare." (NIV)
Why will anyone grieve the only Spirit that can keep us in one piece for the return of our Lord and for eternity in His presence?
Why does anyone will want to cause the Holy Spirit to feel sorrow, pain, unhappiness, or distress?
Do you not know that the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit has the ability to feel emotions? (Luke 10:21; Heb. 10:29; Eph. 4:30)
How can we grieve the Holy Spirit?
1. Unrepentant Sin. One of the major works of the Holy Spirit is to convict us of sin to enable us live free of same by the time Christ comes. Persistence in sin grieves Him. (John 16:8-11)
2. Bitterness and unforgiveness. Another work of the Holy Spirit is to remind us of Jesus's teachings. Love is our 'theme'
3. Ignoring the Holy Spirit voice. Whoever ignores the Spirit of God is heading for destruction. Who else can warn us of spiritual and even physical dangers?
4. Hypocrisy. Our example is Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11)
5. Loving the world more than the Word. Loving the world (the pleasures, twisting the truth of God, preference for sin to holiness) makes it impossible for the Holy Spirit to prepare such for Christ coming.
Allow help, accept help from the HELPER, the HOLY SPIRIT and eternity with Him is guaranteed.
THE WORD: “the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." (John.14.17.NIV)
