A SURE FOUNDATION.
“Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today.” (Deut. 10:15 NIV)
During Moses’ valedictory address to the Israelites, he reminded them why and how they became God’s choice as His nation. It was not by their population or by what they have done but rather because of what their ancestors did. “The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and KEPT THE OATH HE SWORE TO YOUR ANCESTORS THAT HE BROUGHT YOU OUT WITH A MIGHTY HAND and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his
covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.” (Deut. 7:7-9 NIV)
This implies that the Israelites were like any of the other nations on earth – idol worshippers, stubborn, rebellious, and would like to replace God if it was possible. But something stands them out that makes them different, highly favoured and blessed – GOD’S COVENANT WITH THEIR ANCESTORS revealing God’s faithfulness.
Their fore-fathers built a fortress, a sure foundation that cannot be destroyed not on their own power but faith in God. While all the nations and people denied God, Abram believed God. He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.” (Gen. 15:5-6 NIV)
ONE MAN, THROUGH FAITH IN GOD, PRESERVED HIS GENERATIONS IN GOD’S LOVE AND AN EVERLASTING COVENANT. We too can if we are willing to build faith in God and obey His instructions. If we are willing to be different from the rest of the world! Israel stands tall even today.
THE WORD: "Your ancestors who went down into Egypt were seventy in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky." (Deut.10.22.NIV)
