"THE THORN IN THE FLESH." (2)
There are inconclusive suggestions about what Paul's thorn in the flesh was. Some suggested that because he was blinded on the way to Damascus, his thorn must be related to eyes problem. But the Bible records that he regained his sight. "Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, (Act.9.17-18.NIV). We also have evidence that his thorn could not be his eyes as he wrote some of his letters himself. "See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand!" (Gal.6.11.NIV)(2 Thes. 3:17; Col. 4:18; Philemon 1:19)
Another suggestion of Paul's thorn was sexual in nature. This too is not full proof as he wrote; "Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. (1 Cor.7.8-9.NIV) Reference: Matthew 19:12.
Paul's thorn according to him "...because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me." (2 Cor.12.7.NIV)
Israel had the thorn too which suggests that the thorn was not necessarily in the body but a persistent, irritating, annoying, enemy. “No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and SHARP THORNS. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord." (Ezek.28.24.NIV).
It didn't stop there. Our Lord Jesus had a crown of thorn placed on His head, sharp and piercing that it drew blood. Who placed the crown of thorn on His head? The enemy! It was meant to cause maximum pain or even death but instead, the thorn became our redemption. "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." (James1.2-3.NIV)
Those in Christ Jesus are winners irrespective of the thorns we bear in the flesh.
THE WORD: "Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed." (John.3.20.NIV)
