ONE IN THREE PARABLES.
In the Book of Luke chapter 15, Jesus told three parables to His audience to drive home the reason He came in the flesh.
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
The Parable of the Lost Coin and
The Parable of the Prodigal Son.
The audience were Gentiles and the Jews. “Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” (Luke 15:1-2 NIV)
The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were the ones who expressed their discomfort seeing that Jesus operates outside their law. Ordinarily, there should be separation between the Jews and the Gentiles. Jesus answered them with one parable but for clarity spoke in three parables.
He told them the Parable of the Lost Sheep – a hundred sheep were in wilderness but one got lost. The owner left the ninety-nine to look for the one lost. In other words, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were the ninety-nine sheep while the tax collectors and sinners represented the one sheep that went a strayed. “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders. (Luke 15:4-5 NIV)
Then He went on to tell them about the LOST COIN. There were ten coins, kept in the house but within the house, one of the coins got lost. “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?” (Luk 15:8 NIV). This represented the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who were in the house but were actually lost.
In summary, Jesus told them the parable of the Prodigal Son. The older son in the parable represented the Pharisees and the teachers of law while the younger represented the tax collectors and sinners. One lost within the system, the other lost outside the system. Both required a rescue mission, a Redeemer, a Saviour. Jesus told them three parables same interpretation to drive home.
We all need Jesus Christ.
