DEPRESSION.
The word depression is not found in the KJV but its synonym is FAINTED as in Daniel 8:27; “And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.” (KJV) or Jer. 45:3
What is depression?
The New King James Version (NKJV) used the word depression in the Book of Proverbs and it gives a biblical insight into the meaning of depression. “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.” (Prov. 12:25 NKJV) It is a state of persistent sadness and hopelessness, deep sadness, grief, and despair. It is a condition that affects many individuals, including those within the biblical narratives. It frames these experiences not as a sign of weak faith but as part of human suffering that can occur even among the faithful. Depression could also mean – UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. If this is so, it can cause a great deal of anxiety.
Examples of people who experienced depression in the Bible:
ELIJAH: “So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” (1 Kings 19:2-4 NIV) But God responded by providing Elijah with rest, nourishment, and a renewed sense of purpose, illustrating His care and provision during times of depression.
Jeremiah: He experienced significant emotional pain due to the rejection of his message and the impending doom of Jerusalem. “I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.” (Lam. 3:19)
The likes of David (Psa.42:11), Job, that he cursed the day of his birth (Job 3:1; 13:15); Jacob (Gen. 45:26-27) Israelites (Num. 21:4-5)
We have the comforting word of God not to be anxious for nothing and to place all our burdens on Jesus Christ who already made provisions for our anxieties.
THE WORD: "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken." (Psa.55.22.NIV)
