The seemingly violent decision of God is His judgement for human acts of violence. “......And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.” (Gen. 9:5c & 6 NIV)
And Jesus’ instruction to the disciples to buy swords in Luke 22:36 was not for violence acts - if such is the case, it will be in conflict with His previous teaching in Matthew 5:39 which teaches us to turn the other cheek. Moreso, Jesus rebuked Peter when he cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant (John 18:10). This was after Jesus restored the ear back (Luke 22:51). The instruction to buy swords was in fulfilment of the prophecy of Isaiah. Jesus immediately explains the command by quoting Isaiah 53:12: "And he was numbered with the transgressors." Jesus also remarked that if it was about an eye for an eye - violence - He would have called on his Father for help and legions of army would have been sent (Mat. 26:53-54)
God is not violent. In fact, He hates violence and will take revenge for all acts of violence.
Violence, as depicted in the Bible, is a manifestation of human sinfulness and rebellion against God's order. The Scriptures provide numerous accounts and teachings that illustrate the destructive nature of violence and its consequences on individuals, communities, and nations. From the earliest chapters of Genesis to the prophetic warnings and teachings of the New Testament, the Bible consistently portrays violence as contrary to God's will and detrimental to human flourishing. The consequences of violence. Proverbs 13:2 states, "From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the desire of the faithless is violence." Proverbs 28:17 warns, "A man burdened by bloodguilt will flee into the Pit; let no one support him." Here, the text suggests that violence leads to a life of fear and isolation. Violence when met with violence is destruction. Somebody or many people will be hurt, displaced or die. It never produces peace. Violence plus violence equals destruction. And the destruction is costly to God because what is destroyed, especially life, belongs to God. God does not delight in the death of sinners. When patience meets with violence, it produces victory and humility against violence is strength. To surrender is power not stupidity. "No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength." (Psa. 33:16)
