Mother's day and Mothering Sunday are commonly thought off as being the same thing. But actually and according to history, Mothering Sunday may have evolved into Mother's day.
Mothering Sunday is a Christian holiday in some parts of Europe, which always falls on the last Sunday in Lent. The holiday has had little to do with mothers for most of its history seemingly to start during the 16th century as day for people to return to their mother church, or cathedral, the main church in the area rather than their actual mother. In 1908, Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother on Mothering Sunday. She has for three years previous, campaigned that a day should be set aside to honour mothers, "the person who had done more for you than anyone in the world." We generally, these days, associate women with glamour, sexy, slim, long hair, elegant in looks and beautiful. Some see her as unintelligent and lazy. These thoughts are the absolute opposite of the real woman. In her suffering, she exemplify Jesus and in her unconditional love.
She is the easy target for rape and gets blamed for it. She is a punching bag for some and yet not good enough. She gets abandoned with unwanted pregnancy, blame for it, left in rags to look after the pregnancy and unwanted child. This happens within and without the walls of marriage. Sometimes, she is thrown out like a garbage.
She barely made it through birth pains and yet, when she sets eyes on her new born, there is a surge of love and determination to do her best for its upkeep. She works many jobs to keep her family. In rags, in sweat, come rain or shine, her delight shines through her children. She is the first teacher, doctor, lawyer, pastor, provider, shelter, the best manager, and probably politician. Yet, the men and 'women' she raised sacrificially refuse her any public governance. Why? She is commonise as a woman. Is she seen as a threat, a better competitor, or liability?
