So, what is entitlement mentality?
It is an attitude where people feel they deserve something without necessarily having earned it. It is the "you owe me" attitude. "I deserve better than you"; "you should know who I am" attitude. The sense of entitlement is evident everywhere, at the bus-stops, markets, restaurants, hospitals, homes, including the church. 'I don't have to queue when others are. I deserve the front seat even when late to church. I deserve recognition because I am are a politician or wear ministerial garment.
"But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luk.14.10-11.NIV)
The ONLY person in the entire Bible deserving any sense of entitlement will be Jesus Christ. He had it all and yet left all to die like a criminal for all mankind. He was humble, He obeyed all the laws, never once claimed or acted like a king that He is. You may ask yourself this question: AM I entitled to live today? There is no criteria for it. The answer is NO! You are alive by His GRACE alone not entitled.
"A sense of deservedness or entitlement will keep us from knowing Christ." (John Pipet). Why? Because, it is the spirit of pride, self-centeredness, disobedience, indiscipline, lack of consideration and evidence that such people are yet to give their lives to Jesus Christ.
May we take our restless, entitled hearts to the throne of Grace and surrender to our loving Father.
WORD: "For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.......... Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
(1 Tim. 6.7-12.NIV)
