April 18th, 2025DECLINE IN SPIRITUAL AND MORAL STANDARDS.
"In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit." (Jdg.17.6.NIV)
It is so amazing and exciting when one sees or relates current events or particular event to stories in the Bible. One of such events is Judges 17:6. "In those days Israel had no king and everyone did as they pleased." This is so true and real in many families. One time, you see a family (immediate and extended) glue together like one bunch of the red fruit of palm oil. And as soon as the central figure dies, the family just disintegrated. The result is devastating. The family keeps growing but in different directions. The values and strength of the family decline rapidly. There is no easy fix no matter how hard the living tries.
This was the situation in Israel during the time of the Judges, especially after the death of Joshua.
In Judges 17:1-5, Micah stole from his mother. His mother unaware of who stole her coins, cursed. Later, Micah returned the coins, the mother blessed him and gave part of the coins to a goldsmith, who made an idol from it. Micah put the idol in his shrine and put one of his sons in charge. He was not even a Levite. He did all the things God commanded them not to do. He probably knew little or nothing about the God of his ancestors.
Why was there no king in Israel?
God was their King and He appointed His representative/s like Moses, and Joshua. But He did that when the people focused on Him. Once they sort other gods, God allowed them the full weight of their choice until they repented.
This is the position we find ourselves today, in the family, government, corporate bodies and the church. Things go well when a God-fearing person is at the realm of affairs because he allows God to order his footsteps (Prov. 3:5&6). The opposite is the case when one who doesn't respect God takes over. It is not really about succession plans; it is about putting God first.
To real succeed, allow God to direct your path.
