Vengeance is punishment inflicted or retribution exacted for an injury or wrong (Oxford languages).
It is like settling scores with no ending because whoever suffers defeat goes away to recharge, comes back to reopen old wounds. Vengeance in human hands is a cycle of violence. The hostility stays in families for many generations while the source of the problem has long been forgotten.
Vengeance leaves destructions in its path. Rather than take the path of vengeance, the scriptures encourage us to turn the other cheek. To focus more on forgiveness, swallow pride, let go of anger and allow God to balance the equation. This way, the feud will not be generational.
God’s justice is perfect and comprehensive encompassing both punishment of wrongdoing and the restoration of the wronged. God’s vengeance challenges us to TRUST Him rather than trust self. Sometimes we are powerless to revenge because the opposition is oppressive (master/slave), so, we suffer in silence (Israel in Egypt under the thumb of Pharaoh). Seeking God's vengeance is actually choosing PEACE.
"Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. [18] If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. [19] Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord." (Rom.12.17-19.NIV)
Pharaoh paid a huge price when God revenged his mistreatment of Israel. God shamed all the gods of Egypt, then the death of the first born sons of all the families without exception. Then they paid the full wages denied the Israelites for their labour and then Pharaoh and his army perished in the red sea. Justice was served.
God’s vengeance extends to the dead too. For the planned death of Uriah, husband of Bathsheba, by David, a few of David's sons lost their lives by the sword too.
God’s vengeance is punishment for sin which Jesus Christ paid fully for those of us that believe in Him.
WORD: “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us." (Rom.8.33-34.NIV)
