PARENTING - DAVID'S STYLE.
David's sons can be divided into two groups. Those born to him in Hebron (2 Sam.3:2-5) and those born to him in Jerusalem. The first sets were born when David was more of a warrior, in his youth and full of energy while the second group were born to him in his late forties thereabout.
There is no doubt that David deeply loved and cared for his children. He must have showered them with his wealth because they each have houses, fields and the affluence of prince's as should be.
Noticeable is the fact that David spoilt his children by yielding to every of their requests. This was so obvious that the children manipulated this weakness. Tamar said: "..........Please, just speak to the king about it, and he will let you marry me.” (2 Sam.13.13.NLT).
"So Amnon lay down and pretended to be sick. And when the king came to see him, Amnon asked him, “Please let my sister Tamar come and cook my favorite dish as I watch. Then I can eat it from her own hands.” So David agreed and sent Tamar to Amnon’s house to prepare some food for him."
(2 Sam.]13.6-7.NLT) (The request seemed suspicious. But like most fathers, David, may be, too busy to notice the signature of the devil. He didn't asked questions. Rape followed.
ABSALOM: “Well, then,” Absalom said, “if you can’t come, how about sending my brother Amnon with us?” “Why Amnon?” the king asked. [27] But Absalom kept on pressing the king until he finally agreed to let all his sons attend, including Amnon. So Absalom prepared a feast fit for a king." (2 Sam.13.26-27.NLT) This time, David asked questions but his weakness showed through. Death followed.
Absalom openly planned treasonable acts against his father (2 Sam. 15:1-6). No where in the Bible was it mentioned that David knew about it. But as the king, this act must have reached his ears, but he did nothing. Absalom then asked for his permission to go to Hebron. "After four years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron to offer a sacrifice to the Lord and fulfill a vow I made to him......“All right,” the king told him. “Go and fulfill your vow.” So Absalom went to Hebron." (2 Sam.15.7-9.NLT) What followed? David had to run for his life.
