PARENTING - DAVID'S STYLE III
An important aim of parenting should be that each child is able to stand on his own and fend for himself and possibly help others in need. When we move away from the usual story of Esau who traded his birthright and Jacob who stole his brother's blessing, we will see that Esau was trained to work for his living in spite of the fact that Isaac, his father was a very wealthy man. Jacob's skill was not that obvious when he was at home (except that he was a supplanter), hidden in his mother's shadow. But when he left home and worked for Laban, he was able to fend for himself and his large family.
We can be wealthy and still train our children to be independent of us. David seemed to have missed this.
Irrespective of the parenting manuals out there, most parents 'unconsciously' train their children from how they were raised. Otherwise, parenting is dictated by the emotional stability or instability of parents. Apparently, David's root of escape was to dance to his children's tune. That way, he also probably avoided confrontations from his wives.
God gave us three blueprints in raising children.
1. Train them in the way they so go (Prov. 22:6). Lay a clear path. If you allow them to have their own ways, they are unlikely to change when they become adults.
2. Spare the rod and you spoil the child (Prov. 13:24). Do not be economical on discipline. Set boundaries.
3. Ensure not to provoke your children (Eph. 6:4).
Don't make them rebellious.
Modern parenting is sparing the rod. Every disciplinary action is interpreted as child abuse. Whereas, love, discipline and truth are co-tenants. Parents cannot claim to love their children when discipline is absent. It also signals the absence of truth.
David who took care of his aging parents (1 Sam. 22:34), fend for himself, man after God's heart, compassionate and help to widows, a mighty warrior and a just king failed as a father. Why?
WORD: “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long." (Psa.25.4-5.NIV)
