JOASH, EXAMPLE OF KNOWING THE PASTOR, NOT GOD.
Joash, a descendant of king David, became king of Judah when he was only seven years old .
The Background story of Joash.
Joash was the son of Ahaziah.
Ahaziah was the son of Jehoram
Jehoram married Ahab's daughter, Athaliah.
Ahab, son of Omri was then the king of Israel. That made Jezebel the mother of Athaliah, and Athaliah the grandmother of Joash.
"Jehoram followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord." (2 Chron.21.6.NIV)
When Athaliah saw that her son, Ahaziah, was dead, she gave the order that all the royal princes be killed. But Johosheba, the sister of Ahaziah, who was married to Jehoiada, the priest, couldn't bear that a year old Joash be killed. So, she stole him and hid him in the temple. Jehoiada became the father figure to him. At age seven, Jehoiada with the support of the Levites and loyal people declared Joash king (2 Chron. 23:1-11). "Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord ALL THE YEARS OF JEHOIADA the priest." (2 Chron.24.2.NIV) "After the death of Jehoiada, the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them." (2 Chron.24.17.NIV) He turned evil.
The question is why did Joash listened to man after the death of his mentor, who taught him the way of the Lord? Is it possible Joash didn't know God but merely did as advised by the Priest? He was definitely not on solid foundation and that was his downfall.
There are many 'Believers' today who quote their Bishops, GOs, Pastors as if quoting the scriptures. Their trust and hope are in the words of their Pastors. Unknown to many, they have made idols of their pastors until there is a fallout between them. It is good to learn from the men of God but important to establish oneself in the true God that never fails. Joash fell as soon as Jehoiada stopped ministering.
King Saul too knew Samuel but not the God of Samuel. That was the reason he looked for Samuel among the dead not the living God. SEEK GOD while He may still be found (Isa 55:6)
THE WORD: “A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” (Isa.40.6-8.NIV)
