PSALMS 8:2
"Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
(NKJV)
The first thought maybe: how can God use the mouth of infants to silence the enemy? Babies who cannot yet talk! God indeed works in mysterious ways. The key words are ordained and strength.
ORDAINED is God’s sovereign act of choosing and empowering individuals for His purpose.
STRENGTH in this context is drawing from God’s power and grace - spiritual growth, faith, and ability to TRUST in His promises. Inner resilience, courage and perseverance.
Jesus referred to this verse of the Bible after He cleansed the temple: "But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the WONDERFUL things he did and the CHILDREN SHOUTING in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant. “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “YES,” REPLIED JESUS, “HAVE YOU NEVER READ, “ ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”
(Mat.21.15-16.NIV) (The enemy - those who oppose the Good News.)
Or like in Exodus 2:6 - "She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said. (NIV). The baby was Moses. The enemy was Pharaoh. Moses later destroyed the enemy. Babes grow into maturity.
This takes us to 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him." (NIV)
Therefore, Psalms 8:2 is a metaphor for a childlike heart that receives the Word of God simply based on childlike TRUST (John 3:16). These are the babes and nursing infants ordained to silence the enemy, and the avenger.
God had conferred great honour on men - men so humble and weak that they might be compared to infants - by making them the means of overthrowing His enemies.
THE WORD: "But we have this TREASURE in JARS OF CLAY to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." (2 Cor.4.7.NIV)
