THE SNAKE IN THE HOUSE - Devotional

PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT.

THE SNAKE IN THE HOUSE!
Have you ever opened your mouth wide, pulled out your tongue, then slowly moved it up and down, left and right? What does it looks like? It looks like the tongue of a snake ready to strike.

James describes it thus: "....It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison" (Jas.3.8.NIV). "The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell" (Jas.3.6.NIV). Think about this - there was no war that was not ignited by the tongue. No family feud started without the tongue and kept alive without the tongue. The tongue acts like the serpent and yet capable of peace.

The Psamist wrote: "Save me, Lord, from lying lips and from DECEITFUL tongues." (Psa.120.2.NIV) Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent DECEIVED me, and I ate.” (Gen.3.13.NIV) Can you see the similarities between the devil and the human tongue?

Interestingly, Jesus declared; "You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."
(Mat.12.34.NIV). So, the tongue does not act alone. It works in collaboration with the heart - the abundance of the heart, that is what has been nurtured and fully grown. The tongue can be a messenger of terror or peace depending on what we allowed the heart to grow. "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." (Prov.18.21.NIV)

The Psamist's advise: "Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.
(Psa.34.12-13.NIV) This same sentiment is echoed by Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 3:10.

The gossips, mockers, warmongers, destroyers, deceit, all wear the same uniform and the same weapon, THE TONGUE. Any wonder that the scripture says, "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,....."
(Psa.1.1.NIV)

THE WORD: "Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies." (Psa.141.3-4.NIV)
