WRESTLING WITH GOD (2)
Jacob must have been vey troubled the night he wrestled with God. Here he was in the middle of nowhere with his wives, concubines, eleven children, servants, livestock, and constantly under threat.
Here was a man who vowed to God at Bethel: saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.” (Gen.28.20-22.NIV), only for Laban to obstruct his path. Jacob worked seven years for the love of his life but was deceived and had to work another seven years for her. He wanted one wife, he got two because of tradition (Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one." (Gen.29.26.NIV). Because Rachel was barren for sometime, and desperate to be a mother, Jacob ended up with four women. Three times Laban changed his wages and Laban will not let Jacob go without a fight.
When Jacob was finally able to grow his own wealth, (Gen. 30:25-43), he had to take the back door to flee from his father-in-law. When Laban found out, he pursued Jacob and war was in the air. When this failed and they settled amicably, news came to Jacob that his brother Esau whom he stole his birth right was approaching them with 400 men!
That eventually brought Jacob to his knees. Now he remembered the God who appeared to him at Bethel. He had become powerless, probably remembered the death threat of Esua which made him ran to Laban (Gen. 27:41-46).
Another lesson learnt is when our human wisdom, power, intelligence reached their limits, and with nowhere to turn or run, we often turn to God. Jacob turned to God and prayed as never before. He desperately needed a change in his life. He refused to give up. He was persistent in prayer (Luke 18:1-5) until God blessed him. And instead of war, Esau met him with peace. Jacob was highly favoured from then on till his death.
THE WORD: Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” (Gen.32.26.NIV)
