July 15th, 2025THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ARK OF THE COVENANT Except.....(2)
The Ark of covenant moved seven times from Shiloh to the Temple built by King Solomon. In the course of these movements, the contents inside the Ark of covenant decreased living only the two stone tablets containing the commandments of God.
What happened to the Jar of manna and the Aaron rod that budded? Why were these items not in the Ark? The Bible did not give us insight to the why and where. But we read that the Glory of God departed from Israel. "She named the child Ichabod (which means “Where is the glory?”), for she said, “Israel’s glory is gone.” She named him this because the Ark of God had been captured and because her father-in-law and husband were dead." (1 Sam.4.21.NLT)
Before this time, we know that "In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes." (Jdg.21.25.NLT) Why?
United we stand; divided we fall. The clans got their inheritance and concentration shifted from God to possessions. It was difficult for Joshua to hold all together after the sharing of the land. This was obvious from his farewell address. The death of Joshua, the leader and Eleazar the Priest (Joshua.24:29-33) did not help matters, neither did Eli and his sons' behaviour.
From the Judges to Eli, there was a lack of consensus or a common moral compass leading to diverse and potential conflicting actions. The loss of the Ark of covenant, meaning the loss of God’s presence and blessing due to sin and disobedience, was a shift from divine favour and protection to potential judgement and hardship.
Samuel did what he could to bring the people to focus on God and so did David. But by the time of Solomon, only the two stone tablets remained. The divine authority was gone so was the constant supply of God’s provisions, protection and blessing. The missing items were symbolic. The first thing that was put in the Ark was the last thing that remained in it - the covenant. God still holds His part of that covenant till today. And Jesus said; “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose." (Mat.5.17.NLT)
THE WORD: “You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgiveness instead of crying out for vengeance like the blood of Abel." (Heb.12.24.NLT)
