HOLY SPIRIT GIFT OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES.
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work............To one there is given through the Spirit a message of WISDOM, to another a message of KNOWLEDGE by means of the same Spirit, to another FAITH by the same Spirit, to another gifts of HEALING by that one Spirit, to another MIRACULOUS powers, to another PROPHECY, to another DISTINGUISHING between spirits, to another SPEAKING IN DIFFERENT KINDS OF TONGUES, and to still another the INTERPRETATION of tongues." (1 Cor.12.4-10.NIV)
In Luke 10:19, Jesus said that He has given us power to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall hurt us. That power includes all the gifts of the Spirit. These gifts are part of our weapon in battle. Yet many Christians today have rejected the gift of speaking in tongues. Why?
1. They do not know the importance of the gift.
2. The gift is embarrassing especially because it does not make human sense
3. Many have faked it in the past just to belong to the fold.
4. Many Churches do not believe or allow the gift especially during service. But why not desire it for your personal meditation and communication with God?
The Bible categories this gift as "........... the tongues of men or of angels,......" (1Cor.13.1.NIV). If so, shouldn't you desire to speak like angels?
Some of the advantages of speaking in tongues are, it comes with the help of the Holy Spirit and you are speaking directly to God. It is not static but dynamic. It completely disarms Satan and his agents. You can speak in tongues for as long as you are enabled.
How do you receive this gift?
All believers has access to speaking in tongues just by asking (Mat.7:7-12). Ask and be expectant. Open your mouth and speak out whatever is on your tongue. It may not make sense to you initially but soon will. It often comes when we are in worship mode. Do not copy or imitate others, that will be mere sound.
THE WORD: “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
(Mark.16.17-18.NIV)
