WHAT IS THE NEW COVENANT? - Devotional

WHAT IS THE NEW COVENANT?
According to Jeremiah 31:31-34, and as referenced in Hebrews 8:10-12, the new covenant is “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Jer.31.34.NIV). This became effective at the death of Jesus. "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant." (Heb.9.15.NIV) Why?
".......because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. [18] This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood."
(Heb.9.17-18.NIV)

How is the New covenant a better one?
1. It completely forgives sins of the repentant (Heb.8:12)
2. Makes us children of God (Rom 8:15-16)
3. Gives us a new heart and nature so that we can spontaneously love and obey God (Heb.8:10; Ezek. 11:19-20)
4. Brings us into a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the Father (Heb. 8:11)
5. Provides a greater experience in the Holy Spirit (Joel 2:28; Acts 1:5,8; 2:16-17)

What is the main difference between the Old and New Covenant?
The Old  covenant emphasised external obedience to a set of laws written on STONE TABLETS, while the New covenant focuses on an internal transformation through faith and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, writing God's law on THE HEARTS of believers. The shift moves from a system of rules and rituals to a relationship with God based on grace and love.

Both the Old and the New covenants have one thinking common - FAITH. Without which we cannot please God.

We often read that the people's heart were hardened under the Old covenant. Could this be because the law was written on stone? And physically broken even before the people could read it? If the New covenant is this simple and simplify, why are many churches still rooted in rules and rituals?

Allow the Holy Spirit to do His work in all of us.

THE WORD: “.....to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel." (Heb.12.24.NIV)
