JONAH THE CLAY, CHALLENGED THE PORTER.
What if the fish that swallowed Jonah was a predator instead of a safe haven? But was unable to harm him because the Lord forbade it?
Jonah was very defiant from the moment God called him and sent him to deliver His message to the people of Nineveh. “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, HOPING TO ESCAPE FROM THE LORD by sailing to Tarshish." (Jonah.1.2-3.NLT)
The story gets more interesting because it shows a man’s courage, determination, and fearlessness in the face of death. What was Jonah thinking when he told the other men, “Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.”? (Jonah.1.12.NLT) Did he think he will die? Or was he sure he will survive it?
Whatever his thoughts were, Jonah was courage though in defiance.
1. Jonah looked into the eye of the raging/tempestuous sea and said, "throw me inside it."
2. Jonah was been swirled through the current of the deep sea. He saw the unforgiving floods and didn't seem afraid. "You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me." (Jonah.2.3.NIV)
3. He saw total darkness when he was swallowed up and that was when he broke down and surrendered. “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple." (Jonah.2.7.NIV)
This is evident of how far human beings are willing to go to turn our backs on God until we can no longer breathe. Can anyone truly run away from God? In an act of defiance, Jonah actually elaborated the power and sovereignty of God.
God demonstrated His power over all His creations, in the raging storm, in the depth of the sea, and over the fishes of the sea. What unfolded here shows that God will go to any length to save His own or just to prove a point.
To obey is better than sacrifice.
