UNBELIEVABLE FAITH OF STRANGERS!
“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Mat. 8:10-12 NIV)
Jesus said this in praise of the Centurion and at the same time, He exposed the truth about many who are believers but who lack faith. Many are in churches today who have received Jesus as Lord and Saviour. They have confessed their sins and have been baptized with the Holy Spirit yet weak in faith. Their faith cannot move anything. Jesus warns that strangers from the east and the west will take the places of such people at the feast in the kingdom. Without faith, we cannot please God.
The Centurion was a Roman citizen. He was not a Jew and he did not worship in the synagogue, but he heard about Jesus. His servant was sick and dying. He asked Jesus to help. But on His way to the Centurion’s place, the Centurion told Him he was unfit for such visit. He trusted the word of Jesus. He was a stranger to the faith yet he demonstrated absolute faith in the power of Jesus Christ.
A Gentile woman (identified as Canaanite or Syrophoenician) approached Jesus, asking him to heal her demon-possessed daughter. Jesus initially ignored her and his disciples requested he sent her away. This was the conversation that followed; “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “For it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs. Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” This is faith! Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.” Who are the children? – The Believers! But do we have such deep faith in our own Lord and Saviour? This Gentile woman, like the Centurion, only heard about Jesus but believed that He was the answer to her problem.
Jesus encountered ten men afflicted with leprosy and commanded them to show themselves to the priests. Note that there was no indication that they were healed when He gave them that instruction. As they went, they were all miraculously healed. One man, a Samaritan, returned to Jesus to express his gratitude by praising God, while the other nine did not. Who were these nine that did not return to praise God? You guess is as good as mine!
As believers, we take the grace and favour of God for granted. This is a wake up call
THE WORD: "No one can please God without faith, for whoever comes to God must have faith that God exists and rewards those who seek him."
