THE FEAR OF SHAME AND DISGRACE LEAD TO MORE CRIMINAL ACTIONS.
Fear of shame, disgrace and humiliation, have driven us to do unspeakable things that we believed will be kept hidden because we think we are smart. The root cause of our fall stems out of pride but the immediate cover-up comes from the fear of shame and disgrace. Unfortunately, the actions taken to cover the initial act of our pride is worse and cruel than the act itself, and all because we want to avoid shame and disgrace.
A person stole money out of desperation or the conviction that he will not be caught. But his secret was not properly buried – someone discovered his secret and to avoid the shame of been caught, he killed the person who has the evidence. In the thief’s mind, he had solved his problem but this ‘solution’ is only temporary because the shame he tried to avoid will still catch up with him. What gets us deeper into criminal acts is running from shame and disgrace.
Adam and Eve immediately went into hiding after their fall. The fall was a direct act of disobedience initiated by their pride (I can do all things without consequence/s). But to avoid being caught, they went into hiding thinking maybe they will not be found. When they were caught, instead of confession they accused one another to avoid the fallout of their action (Gen. 3). We do desperate things just to cover up the fall-out of our misadventure to avoid the shame.
Cain couldn’t bear the shame of losing to his brother, so he killed him. He killed the only person who knew his truth, to cover-up his shame. But God saw him! He still suffered the shame and this time, it was more elaborate (Gen. 4)
David suffered the same fate. The initial sin was adultery with Bathsheba another man’s wife. To avoid been discovered – having realized that the act was disgraceful, he ordered the death of Bathsheba’s husband. Adultery was one thing, but murder of the innocent soul was worse, still the shame refused to leave. In this day and age, David would have secretly aborted Bathsheba's pregnancy. Will that have made a difference? Absolutely Not!
It is better to be on the side of obedience even when we think we are missing out on fun and crime related actions wrapped in pleasure.
THE WORD: “Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame." (Isa.50.7.NLT)
