CHRISTLIKE CHARACTER IS A LIFELONG PROCESS.
Have you ever wondered why the so call men and women of God fall like Adam in the Garden of Eden? Have you wondered why believers who appear to be so soaked in the Word of God, preach like from the fire of Elijah, carry themselves like the holy of holy but could not resist the treasury, and or hide some dark secrets? Does it bother you that you have been converted for close to twenty or more years yet can’t resist some worldly desires?
There is a reality that we misunderstand and or takes for granted that it has, or will work itself out. It is the scripture written in 2 Corinthians 5:17, which says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new!". This verse signifies that believers in Christ experience a profound transformation, leaving behind their former way of life and receiving a new spiritual identity and purpose. This is very true BUT it is a means to an end. The believers have the power, the power of the Holy Spirit, to become totally new. Because we received the Spirit of God that created all things and makes all things new. “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Gen. 1:2-3 NIV) But to live a new life, a Christlike life takes a conscious and determined desire to let go of your previous being.
■Romans 8:29 reads that God has predestined His people TO BE CONFORMED to the image of His Son: that is, to become like Jesus. Conformity to the image of God means to become like Jesus: Christlikeness is the eternal predestinating purpose of God.
■2 Cor. 3:18 “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are BEING TRANSFORMED into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” In this second stage of becoming like Christ, you will notice that the perspective has changed from the past to the present, from God’s eternal predestination to His present transformation of us by the Holy Spirit.
■The third text: 1 John 3:2. “Beloved, we are God’s children now and IT DOES NOT YET APPEAR WHAT WE SHALL BE but we know that when he appears, we will be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” We don’t know in any detail what we shall be in the last day, but we do know that we will be like Christ. Here are three perspectives—past, present, and future.
THE WORD: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Rom.12.2.NIV)
