“SEND THEM AWAY.”
How often did Jesus’ disciples advise Him to “send the people away” and why?
How does this attitude resonate with us every day?
How does the church contribute to this self-centered mindset?
Jesus came for the people. Jesus went about pulling crowds to Himself so that they can hear His truth first hand. And every time there is an issue, the first reaction of the disciples was ‘send them away.’ ‘We do not have enough.’ ‘Why is He talking to a woman?’ – suspicion!
At the feeding of the 5000; “As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. SEND THE CROWDS AWAY, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus
replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered (Mat. 14:15-17 NIV). We never seem to have enough even when we throw some of what is not enough into the garbage truck.
At the feeding of the 4000 (just a chapter after the feeding of 5000); Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.” His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?” (Mat. 15:32-33 NIV) We forget that Jesus Christ is the PROVIDER. We only say it but we do not believe it and or we do not practice it.
A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” Jesus did not answer a word. So, his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” (Mat. 15:22-23 NIV)
Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Mat. 19:13-14 NIV)
Why do we present ourselves as the obstacle?
THE WORD: “On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
(Mark.2.17.NIV)
