WHAT DID IT COST SARAH TO BIRTH THE PROMISE LINE?
The was a deep fall in the Garden of Eden that caused God so much pain that He pronounced some curses on His creations – Adam, Eve and the serpent. “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” (Gen. 3:15-16 NIV) Later, God had to wipe the world clean of the sin of Adam and Eve by flood, leaving only Noah and his family. The population of the world was on eight people. Noah, his wife, three sons and three daughters-in-law. Gradually, the world was populated again but God did not forget His promises to the serpent and the woman.
Sometime in history, God found and called Abram to follow Him. There was a delay from Abram before he fully answered the call. We are not sure when he actually married his half-sister: before or after the call. What we do know was that Sarai was by his side when he left Haran for the UNKNOWN country. Sarai couldn’t have been more than twelve years old when she was bestowed as wife to her brother. ‘YOUR DESIRE WILL BE FOR YOUR HUSBAND’
God will soon add another layer of promise to the curse from in the Garden, this time to Abram as the chosen to start the lineage of the Messiah. “….I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; AND ALL PEOPLES ON EARTH WILL BE BLESSED THROUGH YOU.” (Gen. 12:3) – the lineage of the Messiah began. If Abram was seventy-five years old by then, Sarai was about sixty-five years old, and barren. They got the promise at the time Sarai was past child bearing age by the current world standard.
When Abram made this fact known to God, - “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, BUT A SON WHO IS YOUR OWN FLESH AND BLOOD will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” (Gen. 15:3-5 NIV) (to be contd)
