WHAT DID IT COST SARAH TO BIRTH THE PROMISE LINE.
God confirmed and re-confirmed His commitment to His promise to Abram but the waiting was unbearable. Abram must have shared with Sarai his discussions with God thereby placing on her or sharing the burden with her. In-between, there was famine in the land, and they had to journey to Egypt where Pharaoh showed interest in Sarai – a sixty-five-year-old woman! (Sarai must have possessed and extra-ordinary beauty and youthfulness to be that attractive) The reality was, the arrangement must have been embarrassing to her and shameful, but what choice did she have? (Gen. 12:14-20)
At a point, she decided to help her husband achieve his desire for a son. She introduced her maid to him to share their bed and their intimacy. This action must have stripped her of all her dignity and pride. A sacrifice or additional sacrifice evidencing her love and loyalty to Abram. An attempt to make her husband happy and fulfilled. But Hagar wasn’t God’s plan and God wasn’t buying it. Ishmael was born but Sarai’s shame and suffering for been barren did not soften. It was worse because even Hagar, her maid, now has a say in her life (Gen. 16)
God appeared to Abram again to establish the covenant which cannot be broken. Somewhere along the line, He changed his name to Abraham and Sarai to Sarah – was this a renewal of their marriage where Hagar was excluded? (Gen. 17).
Abraham happened to travel south and there, again, another king, this time Abimelech saw Sarah and was interested in her. Again, she lied for her husband, she was taken into his household but God intervened. She eventually got pregnant at age ninety years old with the same Abraham, and gave birth to a son named Isaac after a life time of decades of waiting, immense disappointments, enduring a difficult nomadic life, facing societal pressure that cumulated into bringing Hagar in, questioning God and finally exercising an air of resignation or powerful faith believing in God’s promise when it seemed impossible.
Why did Sarah have to endure all these?
The Messianic lineage is not just any lineage. It is God preparing the way for His ultimate deliverance of men.
Sarah was old – ancient. Impossible age to give birth, but not with the Holy Spirit.
Mary was young – New and All of God the Holy Spirit.
Sarah’s womb was old but unused until Isaac. Mary’s womb was new unused until Jesus was formed in it. Joseph’s tomb was new unused until Jesus was laid in it. IT WAS ALL ABOUT JESUS!
