“WHEN THE FOUNDATIONS ARE DESTROYED.”
“When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psa. 11:3 NIV)
There are two parts to this question:
• When the foundations are being destroyed…
• What can the righteous do? We may turn this question on its head and ask – what can the righteous not do?
Foundations are extremely important in any building. The stronger the foundation, the stronger the building and the longer it stands the test of time. A weak foundation however collapses at the first sign of stress; hence the need to build on the ROCK and not on the sand (Mat. 7:24-27). Anything we desired to last long has to be built on solid foundations.
What is a solid unmovable, unshakable, unpullable, foundation? TRUTH!
Truth, and truth and truth. Any other foundation will soon tilt on its head and collapse, be it physical building, spiritual building, marriage, partnership, friendship, business, education, any venture or joint ventures in life.
“When the foundations are destroyed,” – this can only mean one thing – a foundation that can be destroyed is not built on truth. “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor. 3:11 NIV) Jesus said: I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND LIFE (John 14:6)
So, when the Psalmist says when the foundations are being destroyed, he sees a structural defect of corruption, absolute power that corrupts absolutely. And what can the righteous do? The righteous can do plenty. The first is, the righteous stands on truth even in the face of death. If the ‘righteous’ cannot do that, it means he/she is not right with God. He is wearing a camouflage. Stephen did not shrink in the face of death because he stood on a solid foundation. This was why David told his friends; "In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain.” (Psa. 11:1 NIV). Why should I seek other refuge?
Many of us, at the first sign of trouble, friends advise us to flee to other means of solving the problem. They yield the advice and leave the security of God for emptiness. The problem then escalates more like the problem of King Saul until he drove himself to death. Turn back now. Confess your sins and seek His forgiveness. For there is no other solution than in the name, word, and blood of Jesus Christ,
THE WORD: “If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work." (1 Cor.3.12-13.NIV)
