“WOMAN, WHY ARE YOU CRYING?”
Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” (John 20:11-13 NIV)
GRIEF IS DEADLY.
Mary Magdalene was one of the first people to notice that the stone to the tomb had been rolled away, signifying an empty tomb. She ran with all her might to inform the disciples. Peter and John ran with her to the burial place of Jesus only to find the tomb empty. While Peter and John left to process what they saw, Mary stayed behind stricken with grief. In front of her was an empty tomb. She saw two angels who spoke to her. SHE SAW BUT WAS NOT PROCESSING.
“At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but SHE DID NOT REALISE that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” (John 20:14-15 NIV) Again, she gave her reason for crying. She was totally consumed with grief that she was unable to see the reality. She did not want to wake up from the loss she witnessed three days prior. She was among the living but looking for the dead. All the evidence of the risen Lord were in front of Mary – the empty tomb, the expression of Peter and John, the angels, the Lord Himself, the voices, - all these were a blur to Mary. She would rather keep the grief than the joy of her discovery.
Recall the man at the pool, Bethesda? Jesus asked; “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” John 5:6-7 NIV) His condition consumed him beyond reasoning. Are you mentally and physically consumed with your situation?
Grief is destructive and can kill. It blinds, you may not see the truth in front of you. And if allowed to take root, can turn into serious depression which can lead to madness and or turn one into a puppet.
DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CURRENT SITUATION DICTATE YOUR EXISTENCE. It is actually a new beginning. Beware of the enemy. Take the joy and rejoice. Discard the grief. Trust Jesus, not the people.
