“Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” (John 3;6 NIV) What does this mean?
“Born of the flesh" refers to natural, physical birth, which produces human nature ("flesh"). It represents fallen, earthly existence tainted by sin.
"Born of the Spirit": refers to the new birth, or being "born from above." It is the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit creating spiritual life. Mary asked the angel, “how can this be since I am a virgin?” The angel answered: “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35 NIV)
"Like Produces Like": The core argument is that flesh cannot produce spirit. Human effort, morality, or heritage cannot produce salvation. Natural birth and spiritual birth are not the same. Tomato plants cannot produce any other fruit than tomatoes. Man and woman reproduction only produces children after themselves in the flesh. “When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.” (Gen. 5:3 NIV) That is flesh for flesh. Sin transferred from Adam to his children. “In sin my mother conceived me.” (Psa. 51:5)
Those who experience spiritual birth do so by the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit transforms the nature of those who believe in Christ; a born-again person has a new nature. How does this happen? “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8 NIV) “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit..” (Acts 2:3-4 NIV)
Being born of the Spirit is the central essential to possess eternal life. Physical birth and spiritual birth are two different and distinct realms. “The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.”(Acts 11:26)
We cannot receive spiritual life by any human system. Salvation is not contingent on human faculty or effort. It is necessary to humbly accept our spiritual bankruptcy (Php 3:8-9). Spiritual life differs from physical life not simply in the material and non-material sense but in the meaning of mortal versus immortal. God is immortal and we receive His eternal life at salvation. God does not save us based on anything in man. It is possible to polish our lives with religion, but this is a façade. NO MAN CAN COME TO GOD BY HUMAN EFFORT.
