PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

There is something about persistence in prayer. The scripture encourages us to ask until we receive. In order word, do not stop asking, activate your faith, be persistent, be consistent, and you will receive. This means that FAITH IN GOD DOES NOT GIVE UP, no matter the circumstance. No wonder Jesus asked: “However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:8b NIV) Because we give up too easily. When we ask and nothing seems to happen, we look for alternatives. The alternative is usually sub-standard.
Elisha did not become the “chariot of Israel and its horsemen” - a title reserved for Elijah, on a silver platter (2 Kings 13:14). Elisha did not only learn from Elijah, he was glued to him till the end - costing him everything he had including his pride and dignity. Many of us would have given up at the insistence of the master - “stay here please, for the Lord has sent me to……” Elisha went with Elijah from Gilgal to Bethel, to Jericho, to Jordan and then crossed the Jordan river still following. Then Elisha saw it and shouted; a shout of victory (2 Kings 2:12). Elisha calls Elijah “my father”; this is consistent with Elisha's refusal to leave Elijah's side during his last day on earth, as well as his final request to Elijah to receive the “double portion”, i.e. the firstborn son's inheritance.
Are you ready to go all the way without wavering and no matter what it takes, how long it takes, irrespective of the cost (emotionally, physically, spiritually)? Are you going to “stay here” because another person suggested you take a half-measure (Gen, 16:1-4)? Or are you going to appear at the gate of the judge daily until he sees you and meets your request (Luke 18:1-8)? Do you even know the value of what you are asking from God? Are you asking because others are or because you have a specific goal in mind? You may need to recalibrate for FAITH to carry you through.
Have you ever wondered why the Apostles, faced with the most gruesome death, did not give up on Jesus? They refused to deny Jesus because their FAITH had deep roots in the Word of God that never fails and faith when it has taken root, does fail. To their FAITH, they added PERSISTENCE. Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62 NIV) Faith plus perseverance/persistence equals character.
THE WORD: “Now Elisha had been suffering from the illness from which he died. Jehoash king of Israel went down to see him and wept over him. “My father! My father!” he cried. “The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” (2 Kings 13:14 NIV)
