Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and the king took them. Elisha told him, “Strike the ground.” He struck it three times and stopped. The man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.” (2 Kings 13:18-19 NIV)
The questions are: Why was Elisha angry with king Jehoash for striking the ground three times? How was the king supposed to know how many times he was to strike the ground with the arrow? Why will three strikes not be enough?
Jehoash was the king of Israel who paid Elisha a visit when Elisha was incapacitated. The Bible did not give us the reason for the king’s visit. What we know was what Elisha did. He instructed the king to do. “Take the bow in your hands,” he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands “Open the east window,” he said, and he opened it. “Shoot!” Elisha said, and he shot. “The Lord’s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram!” Elisha declared. “You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek.” (vs. 16-17 NIV) This was followed by the instruction to strike the ground.
It took a long time to unravel the mystery. When God has put the enemy into our hands, we must ensure that they are totally destroyed (Deut.20:17) that the enemy will not be able to turn around and pursue us for a long time. (Josh. 10:8; Deut. 28:7; 1 Sam. 24:4;Judges 7:9) What we do is pray for a while and immediately we have some relief, we give up praying and fasting to savor the small victory. Unfortunately, and before long, the enemy regroups and the same problem comes up again and again. This was why Elisha was angry. We should pursue the enemy with holy anger. Imagine if king Jehoash had been angry, he would probably have struck the ground several times more.
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, (1 Pet. 5:8-9 NIV) When you have the opportunity to destroy the sin that easily entangles you, make it permanent (Heb. 12:1-3) Jesus Christ completely destroyed the power of the enemy.
THE WORD: “Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands.” (Josh. 21:44 NIV)
