WHAT IS THE ACTUAL CAUSE OF FEUDS? - Devotional

PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

Mar. 10th, 2026.

A feud is a long-standing, bitter quarrel or deep-seated hostility between two people, families, clans, or groups. It often involves recurring, intense disputes rather than a single argument. So, what is the real cause of this evil that destroys families and makes reconciliation almost impossible?

James gives us the insight: “You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.” (James 4:2 NIV)

Have you ever wondered what you did to attract so much hatred from some people? You truly want to know the cause of so much sibling rivalry that divided families for generations. Even those not born during the conflict seem to have a pretty good idea of what took place and they willingly took the side that agrees with what they were fed.

Lord have mercy.

James, inspired by the Holy Spirit, says all the hatred, bitterness come from desires to have what the other person has that you don't have! (did you read that?!) You covet but you cannot get what you want!  To covet means to have an intense, selfish, or unlawful desire for something that belongs to another person, such as their possessions, spouse, or status. And God warned us -  “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” (Exo. 20:17 NIV)

Now, let us all go back in time and examine the deeply-seated reason for the rivalry, jealousy, quarrels, desire for bodily harm, bitterness, anger, hatred, envy, division, destruction of a worthy foundation. What did you find? Maybe nothing in the real sense of it. If you are the victim, you are probably wondering - what do you have that attracts such hatred? We preach love but do not live love. It is time to let go of this evil that is stealing  joy, killing unity, and destroying foundations.

THE WORD: “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!... It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.” (Psa. 133:1,3 NIV)
