PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

“I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked. For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us GRACE and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” (Psa. 84:10b-11 NIV)
To really appreciate this portion of Psalm 84, we need to know two things. First, the responsibilities of the doorkeepers/gatekeepers in the house of God and second, something about the writers of the Psalm.
The responsibilities of the doorkeepers are written in 1 Chronicles 9:17-34 some of which are: “These gatekeepers and their descendants, by their divisions, were responsible for guarding the entrance to the house of the Lord when that house was a tent. The gatekeepers were stationed on all four sides—east, west, north, and south. Their relatives in the villages came regularly to share their duties for seven-day periods. The four chief gatekeepers, all Levites, were trusted officials, for they were responsible for the ROOMS AND TREASURIES at the house of God. They would spend the night around the house of God, since it was their duty to guard it and to open the gates every morning.” (1 Chron. 9:23-27 NLT) Remember Psalm 134:1-2; the servants of the Lord who stand by night in the presence of the Lord. Here is the fact - a doorkeeper in the house of God stands constantly in the presence of God Almighty.
Who wrote this Psalm?
Psalm 84:1-12 is a Psalm of the sons of Korah. “And some of their brethren of the sons of the Kohathites were in charge of preparing the showbread for every Sabbath. These are the singers, heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites,.....” (1 Chron. 9:32-33 NKJV)
However, there is more behind the story of the Sons of Korah. In Numbers 16-17, Korah and others lead 250 men in a revolt against Moses and Aaron. The purpose of the revolt was to bring about a change in leadership. As the leaders of the opposition stood outside of their tents the ground opened up and consumed Korah and others. Only a few would survive. The few who survived found GRACE by being spared and being assigned to be servants in the sanctuary. This provides a down-to-earth meaning to the praise of Psalm 84:10. They sing from experience of how it is better to be servants in the House of the Lord, rather to be in the tents of those who oppose the Lord.
This should be our cue too. Once bitten, twice shy. We were bought with a price, delivered from the gate of hell through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We have a second chance - GRACE. Wouldn’t it be better to spend it as a doorkeeper in the house of God than be swallowed up and buried alive in the tent of the wicked?
THE WORD: “Those who oppose the LORD will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. “He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.” (1 Sam. 2:10 NIV)
