PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

“But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it YOU WILL CERTAINLY DIE.” (Gen. 2:17 NIV)
There is a small window in the life of every one of us when we were oblivious of right from wrong. We were innocent. We ran around naked and we were not ashamed. The fact was, we did not know we were naked. This ‘age of innocence’ varies from child to child and the environment the child is growing in. Then, this happy, careless, innocent child starts to hide behind the mother or in some corners of the house. That is the moment the innocence died. The day you eat it………….. So, what did we eat? Something that the entire body, soul, and spirit feel is wrong. Or caught in an act that the adults judged wrong.
This is how we all came under the Law. The Law is innocent and right showing us the path we should or should not go. But because we already lost the small window of innocence, a bigger door to sin is opened. We perfected hiding that sin and more sin became easier. We come out pretending that we are innocent. Paul explains: “ But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead. Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.” (Rom. 7:8-11 NIV) We want to do what is right but we always return to doing what is wrong. We become slaves to sin.
Paul spent the next fifteen verses of Romans 7:12-25 explaining the devastating effect that the strong hold of sin had on him just like we are also questioning; ‘why do I keep doing what I hate?’ If I have been set free why do I feel so much like a captive? This is the ongoing battle between the Old self and the New self - Old and New Testaments. This does not mean that we are not new creations in Christ Jesus. It means that our personal efforts to stop sinning cannot stop Sin. On our own, we have no power over sin because we are dead in it. As dead people cannot feel or fight, so people dead in sin cannot fight sin. (To be contd)
