PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

SOLOMON PRAYED - “Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore GIVE TO YOUR SERVANT AN UNDERSTANDING HEART to judge Your people, that I MAY DISCERN BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” (1 Kings 3:7-9 NKJV)

GOD ANSWERED: “ Behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days.” (1 Kings 3:12-13 NKJV)


Solomon’s prayer and God’s response is one of the most bizarre/peculiar in the entire Bible. The question is why? We go back to the beginning.

Genesis 2:17 - God said, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Genesis 3:5 - The serpent said,  “God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Genesis 3:22 - God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil.” 

This can only mean one thing; that in the beginning, God gave man only a pure heart. A good heart with no evil in it. Adam did not know evil until the serpent introduced him to evil. God confirmed that man has become like Him. So, what Solomon asked for went straight to the heart of what God desired most for man to give only a good heart to His people. Solomon chose good over evil - a heart to separate good from evil, This is the entire sacrifice of Jesus Christ to return man’s heart to its original state of a good/pure heart. Choose good, shun evil is the entire message of the New Testament. “Return to Me and I will return to you.” that is repentance and restoration (Mal. 3:7). "Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it." (Psa. 34:14 NIV) "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." (Psa 51:10 NIV)


Solomon got much more than he asked for or ever imagined (Mat. 6:33). God even threw in a long life if he, Solomon remained obedient. (1 Kings 3:14) Let no guile be found in you. (John 1:47; 1 Pet. 2:1-2; Psa. 32:2)


THE WORD: “Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression.” (Psa. 19:12-13 NKJV)
