PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

“Do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15) is the question Jesus asked Peter after Peter’s denial of Him, after the resurrection of Jesus Christ and during the breakfast by the sea. This same question is no longer for Peter to answer but for you and I to ponder and answer. It requires a deep examination of our souls and everything within us to answer as correctly as possible. The bare truth will help us to face our reality.


Do you love Jesus Christ MORE THAN THESE? Do I love Jesus? Do I love Him more than these? What are the ‘THESE’ in your life? For Peter, the ‘these’ in his life could be his trade. He was a fisherman. He was on his business of fishing when Jesus called him (Mat. 4:18-22). After his betrayal and a feeling of helplessness slipped into him, he said to the others (about five disciples with him) “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” (John 21:2-3 NKJV) Or the ‘these’ could be his influence on the other disciples. Was Peter leading them away from the gospel?


There are times on this journey of faith that a deep sense of loneliness and probably emptiness fall over you. In that instance, what did you do? In Peter’s case, he returned to fishing, though he was called into full ministry. The irony was that he caught nothing (no fish) without the Master. The hymn “I gave My life for thee” asked the same question repeatedly - ‘What hast thou done for Me?’ My Father’s house of light, I left for earthly night, what hast thou left for Me? We love to take from God but are unwilling and or reluctant to give back to Him.


Which is more important than your calling? Your business, employment, wealth, family? Some of us may say - but I do not have a calling/ministry. The moment you answer the call to your salvation, you are called. You may not identify your ministry yet but you are an elect of God unto good works (Eph. 2:10). Do you love Jesus more than gold or silver? Are you putting Him first or somewhere in the middle?


Interestingly, Jesus was asking Peter for agape love - unconditional love. Peter was responding with the ‘phileo’ love - brotherly/friendship love. Jesus wants us to move from brotherly love for Him to unconditional love. How much do you love Jesus Christ?


THE WORD: “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.” (John 15:13-14 NKJV)
