PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

Psalm 81 like Psalm 100 leads God’s people into the worship of Him with all the instruments of worship and praises to Him (Psalm 81:1-3) How appropriate! Today is the first Sunday in the 5th month of 2026 and many Christians will soon be heading to their different places of worship.
It is in the middle of this worship that God calls our attention to His faithfulness. “I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket In your distress you called and I rescued you, I answered you out of a thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah.” (Psa 81:6-7) This is not about Israel alone, it is about what God did for all of us, sacrificing His only Son, making Him smaller for our deliverance from the powers of darkness.
This reminder is followed by this sermon: “Hear me, my people, and I will warn you— if you would only listen to me, Israel! You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not worship any god other than me. I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. “But MY PEOPLE WOULD NOT LISTEN TO ME; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.” (Psa. 81:8-12) The problem is not that the world does not know God. How can we expect it to? The problem is that the people of God do not know God, or at least we do not act like we do. Instead of worshipping the Lord and him only, Christians seem to be worshipping the gods of the secular culture - gods of wealth, pleasure, fame, status and self-absorption.
Here is the solution: “If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways, how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes!” (Psa. 81:13-14) The very things we seek God’s attention for are at our finger tips - only listen and obey - DO AWAY WITH YOUR FOREIGN GODS. Jacob took all the foreign gods from all members of his family burying them under an oak tree near Shechem to purify themselves before going to Bethel (Gen. 35:2-4). This act signified a rejection of idolatry, a commitment to worshipping God alone, and a symbolic burial of their past sins.
Here is the consequence either way: “Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him,
and their punishment would last forever. But you would be fed with the finest of wheat;
with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” (Psa. 81:15-16) Make sure you bury all your idols on your way to the church before entering into His presence.
