What is the Bible definition of poverty? Poverty, a condition characterized by the lack of material resources and financial means, is a recurring theme throughout the Bible. (Topical Encyclopedia) There is the material wealth and there is the spiritual wealth. Believers can be blessed with both spiritual and material wealth or blessed with spiritual wealth - faith more than the material wealth.
“Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.” (James 1:7-9 NLT) In this case, what remains is spiritual wealth. So who is rich and who is poor?
One thing stands out for those who put their trust in Christ; His promises to meet their needs. “The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.” (Ps. 34:10 NIV) "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart". (Ps. 37:4 NIV) "And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." (2 Cor. 9:8 NIV) "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:19 NIV)
One of the interesting things about wealth is not so much about wants but about needs. Your wants do not satisfy your needs; your needs satisfy your wants. For example, you are hungry but there is no food in your fridge but you have all your designer clothes, cars etc; at that moment, these things do not meet your needs and you may as well be as poor as the church rat. We live in the moment. If wealth is not meeting your needs as and when, then there is an issue. The issue may be the lack of contentment. Contentment itself is another level of wealth - an indicator of peace of mind. This peace cannot be bought on the counter.
Believers in Christ are not poor either spiritually or materially and this becomes true the moment you stop comparing yourself with others. Even when a believer lacks something he/she desperately desires, there is HOPE sustaining that need till it comes to pass.
Trust in the God that provided manna for 40 years in the wilderness, water in the desert, won battles without your weapons, kept the sandals on for 40 years needing no replacement, who sent Elijah to a poor widow and Jesus to feed 5000 with 5 loaves of bread and two pieces of fish. You are blessed.
THE WORD: “Day by day the Lord takes care of the innocent, and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever. They will not be disgraced in hard times; even in famine they will have more than enough.” (Ps. 37:18-19 NLT)
