“Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (1 Tim. 6:9-10 NIV) So, what is money?
Money is defined as a morally neutral tool to be managed responsibly. While it is widely used for the exchange of goods, payment of taxes, and charity, Scripture emphasizes that the spiritual dangers of wealth lie in human greed and misplaced trust. The genius of money is that it simplifies and facilitates the exchange of goods and services between humans. Simply put, money is a tool of exchange.
What is love? According to the Bible, love is not merely a feeling or an emotion, but an active, selfless choice and the fundamental essence of God’s character. The ultimate example is unconditional, sacrificial love (agape), which is demonstrated by putting the well-being of others before yourself.
What is the relationship between love and money? Since money is a tool, it can be used to express love. It can be used as a gift to solve issues. Money in itself is worthless when stored up. In that instance, money is dead. Love does not die. The difference: Money can be turned into evil and weaponized against humanity in the hands of greedy people. Money makes people corrupt and heartless. Money means power and oppression in the hands of the wrong people. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs..." (1 Cor. 13:4-7) Love is God and God is Love. Money is a human creation in exchange for goods and services and it can be turned into a god if loved and thereby replaces God in our hearts. Thus we cannot serve God and money - we love one and hate the other (Mat. 6:24)
Money has no soul; Love does. Prophet Amos on the character of money - “When will the New Moon be past. That we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, That we may trade wheat? Making the ephah small and the shekel large, falsifying the scales by deceit, That we may buy the poor for silver, And the needy for a pair of sandals— Even sell the bad wheat?” (Amos 8:5-6 NKJV)
Money gives deceit life and license to destroy, steal and kill. Love gives life and abundantly too.
THE WORD: "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God." (1 John 4:7)
