PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

I recently came across this Bible passage - Matthew 6:16-20 listed as soul winning strategy. “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Mat. 6:16-18 NKJV)
For sometimes I sat with this and I was unable to relate it to Soul winning. We all know that Soul winning is about MANDATE - Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15 - METHOD - Acts 1:8; 2 Cor. 5:19-20 - ATTITUDE - Psa. 126:6; 1 Pet. 3:15. What has doing things in secret got to do with soul winning? Jesus said; “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.” (Mat. 10:27)
SOUL WINNING IS ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY.
It is absolutely the decision of the receiver of the Good News to accept the gospel or to reject it. Jesus Christ never said accept Me and you will have life to the general audience. He taught His disciples the richness in His name and what it opens. He called His disciples and taught them saying… But He met the people at the point of their needs and this is where Mark 16:17-18 comes in. And many times the people He healed did not know who He was until He revealed Himself again. His tools - miracles, healing, physical and spiritual food, compassion. Whoever receives spectacular healing in the name of Jesus Christ cannot hide it under the bushel.
Evangelism or soul winning needs spiritual, physical and emotional preparation. And when we fast in preparation, it is between God and you. We allow the Holy Spirit to lead and He decides the need of the ‘harvest’. It may just be a word of prayer and you leave. You are not the one on the bill-board and your Father who sees in secret will do the rest.
The woman at the well heard Jesus reveal her past and present condition in their discussion about drinking water from the well of Jacob, and before the end of their discussion, she was running to the village to call the people out. One soul won equals hundreds of souls. Soul winning is not meant to embarrass the people or condemn them. It is to show them that the God we serve is the real God with evidence.
The confidentiality makes the people trust the bringer of the Good News. If you are loud, the convert is embarrassed, loses confidence, and the ‘fish’ may just return into its world.
THE WORD: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15 NIV)
