PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT
July 19th, 2026.
Comforter’s Lodge Ministries recently posted a question: “Which petition of the Lord’s Prayer consistently exposes the part of your life you refuse to surrender?” That turned on my hunger to know more. How does the Lord’s Prayer expose me? What am I missing? Is the Lord’s Prayer more than what I have recited all my life - a model prayer?
The first thing that struck me is this: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Mat. 6:6) Yes, we have all read it a million times and it simply means what it says. Now, read it again. You are striped bare in this closed room. It is like an X-ray room. The Father is unseen. He has seen your nakedness even before you entered the room. There is no performance, no one to impress, just you and the truth.
Why will Jesus advise us to go into the room, close the door and pray? So, your Father who sees in secret will reward you - reward or exposure? Is your petition going up, or the words won't come out because you miss the order of presentation, or you are instantly reminded of (not accused) of wrongdoing? Or you are just rambling? God is so merciful. He does not want to expose us in public if we can be corrected in secret - truly Our Father. The choice is ours.
Our Father in Heaven - means you have a relationship with God who sits in Heaven - intimate relationship through Christ. Note that it does not say ‘My Father’. Is He your Father? Do you have the right standing to enter His presence?
Hallowed be thy name - this is about God’s holiness. Are you humble enough to be in his presence or you still carry a bit of attitude - self - righteousness?
Your Kingdom come; Your will be done - this is absolute surrender to His commands (exactly what Jesus did). Absolute obedience. Are you willing to give up the total control of your life to Him? Or are you still struggling?
Give us today our daily bread - this is a trust issue. Do you believe He can provide? Why are you anxious? Will your Father send you away empty handed?
And forgive us our debts - which of the debts? Are you willing to confess all or just the ones that hurt less? Still playing god while you want God’s Kingdom to come? Is that pride?
As we also have forgiven our debtors - Have you forgiven all? What you plant you will reap. Unfortunately, you cannot lie before the unseen Father and you cannot be in denial either. You have to confront your anger, bitterness, jealousy, hatred - the result of the X-ray.
The Lord’s prayer is much more than a recital. It exposes us and challenges us to be better. We have a Holy Father who is willing to meet us in secret, correct us in secret, revive us, remind us that obedience is better than sacrifice and how to be free of debts.
THE WORD: “Save me, for I am yours; I have sought out your precepts.” (Psa. 119:94 NIV)
