PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT
July 7th, 2026.
“ What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” (John 2:11 NIV)
The wedding feast at Cana was the first miracle that Jesus performed and it was at the very beginning of His ministry. The first ten verses of John chapter two fully detail the three years earthly ministry of Jesus; His purpose, the cross, and His resurrection. Why at a wedding? Because Jesus, the groom came to prepare His bride (Eph 5:25-27; John 3:29; Rev. 21:2). His ministry is about marriage - just as God is married to Israel. “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord.” (Jer. 31:31-32 NKJV)
“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.” (John 2:1) Why on the 3rd day? That is when God usually does something symbolic - revelation to resurrection. (Hosea 6:2; Gen. 22:4; Exo. 19:16) Jesus refers to His mother Mary as ‘woman’. It sounded rude but it is quite the opposite because it takes us back to Genesis 3:15 where the woman was used - not mother. “I will put enmity between you and the woman.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:5) Mary was probably echoing God. "This is my beloved Son; listen to him". (Mat. 17:5) Jesus knew that the wine Mary was asking for was not just for that wedding but for the whole world.
“Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.” (John 2:6) Why stone jars? Stone was considered always pure. (The commandments on stone tablets.) Otherwise, ritual purity will be difficult. Recall that God required stone not cut by hand for the temple. Six jars for six days of creation and human being imperfection. Jesus chose empty stone jars, filled them with water and drew wine - best wine - from old to new. That is transformation - from the inside out. Listen to the remark of the master of the banquet: “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” (John 2:10) People present deceit as truth but Jesus presents truth throughout and in any relationship.
Jesus will later be given a jar of sour wine when He thirst (John 19:28-30). One jar of sour wine for six of the best wine equals seven jars - perfection. Wine is like blood (Isa. 63:1-3) Cana and Calvary are the same.
THE WORD: "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." (John 10:9)
