PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY - MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT

“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.” (Luke 12:47 NIV)
I have always thought that God’s judgement on Uzzah was very harsh, like many do and concluded that God does not need human help hence the instant death of Uzzah. “...Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.” (2 Sam. 6:6-7)
To understand how we got here, we have to go back a while to when the Philistines captured the Ark. The Philistines were at war with Israel and because Israel was losing the battle, the elders sent for the Ark believing that with the presence of God they would win. Unfortunately, the Philistines won and captured the Ark (1 Sam. 4:1-11) The Ark became a problem in their camp. The people were dying and or suffering from tumors. After seven months, they consulted their gods and it was decided the Ark must be returned to where it belongs. So they built a new cart tied to two cows, put the Ark on it and sent it away. The cows went straight up towards Beth Shemesh. (1 Sam. 5-6) Because about 70 people died in Beth Shemesh for looking into the Ark, it was decided to send it to Kiriath Jearim. “So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim a long time – twenty years in all.” (1 Sam. 7:1-2). Uzzah was the son of Abinadab.
There were specific instructions on how to carry the Ark of the Lord. “After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move, only then are the Kohathites to come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy things or they will die.” (Num. 4:15) But David in his excitement to take the Ark to the City of David, did none of that. He gathered some young men, built a new cart, and did what the Philistines did. (1 Chron. 13:5-12) Three months later David successfully brought the Ark to Jerusalem the right way. (2 Sam. 6:12-14) The Ark was carried on poles by the designated clan.
Uzzah did not only die because he touched the Ark of the Lord but because David acted in ignorance. The Philistines might have gotten away because they did not know but Israel knew. “Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.” (1 Chron. 13:11)
Like David we all sometimes worship God the wrong way but we believe otherwise. David did the right thing but wrongly. We are to carry God in us and on us not push Him in a cart.
